Lotto, Porno - Sicko Great leaders around the world speak of moral regeneration. By this I think they mean that the plebes must not steal from government and big business, and not be too violent towards each other. The strange thing is that public broadcasters can in one frame be advocating a form of sexual morality and the next moment be viewing a sexually explicitly advert or movie. The one hand says stop and the other holds out the sins of the flesh. Paul explains this condition;
".. you must not live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking. They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with continual lust for more." (Ephesians 4:17-19) (Date Added: 2010-06-15)
The Greatest Thing Set me as a seal on Your heart, as a seal on Your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is cruel as the grave; its flames are flames of fire, a flame of Jehovah. Many waters cannot quench love, nor will the rivers overflow it. If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be scorned. (Song of Songs 8:6,7)
Song of Songs skips enticingly between the themes of love between a woman and her lover and the people of God and their Lord. We constantly ask ourselves, is this a man and a woman or God and his people? Paul did the same thing to us in Ephesians 5:
"This is a profound mystery - but I am talking about Christ and the church." (5:32) (Date Added: 2010-06-08)
Be Thou my vision Who knows what the next ten years in world history will bring? Will the United States invade an African country? Will the States become the place nobody wants to visit for fear of terrorism? Will South Africa become the next tiger economy? What will the future look like?
The same uncertainties rule in the personal lives of most people in the developed world. Were will I live in ten years? Will I have work? Who will I be married to? What problems will my children and I manifest?
A generation or so ago someone sang; "There are more questions than answers and the more I find out the less I know?" This increasing uncertainty is driving people mad. Mental health is at an all time low because of all the uncertainty and choices. (Date Added: 2010-06-01)
God's Hand Having asked for blessing and more territory, one finds that these prayers are answered. Not always in the way we expected because remember that the blessing was according to God's agenda. Also the territory given has now placed us out on a limb where we've never been and from where we will soon fall.
Christians find themselves stretched to breaking point. Nobody should have told you that being a Christian is easy. We feel the compassionate heart of God beating in us and go into situations where we are out of our depth. We feel tired, afraid, misled, abandoned and even angry. That is normal, but we have a prayer: (Date Added: 2010-05-25)
What and Where's the Good News? The Fifa world cup coming to South Africa is a reminder to believers that there are billions of precious people who need to hear and believe that Jesus is Lord and God. They are coming to us in the hundreds of thousands and we cannot but be ready to tell them. I have an excitement about their visit and this opportunity.
I however realize that too many "believers" are not ready .
"But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts (exalt Christ as Lord in your hearts (ISV), and be ready always to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason of the hope in you, with meekness and fear." (1 Peter 3:15)
Men are confused as to the basic message: Jesus is God and God is good. Satan has attempted to make human life so bad that people cannot believe GOOD NEWS. (Date Added: 2010-05-12)
Impact for God We heard previously about a man called Jabez who was born, named and lived in sorrow and pain. His fate was however changed by a great God who answered a bold prayer. His story goes:
"Jabez was more honourable than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez, saying 'I gave birth to him in pain'. Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain'. And God granted his request". (1 Chronicles 4:9,10)
Jabez had the wisdom to call out to God in his desperation and placed his fate in the Lord's hands. He was bold enough to ask for blessing and wise enough to trust that God knew best. (Date Added: 2010-05-11)
Courage Faith is seen as a number of things to believe and a way of thinking. Faith is easily understood to be a passive thing. This leave the modern believer inactive and ineffective. His faith does not really make a difference in his life.
People of faith in the Bible are people who accomplished great things. They took a word or and instruction from God, did it despite great opposition and made a eternal mark on the world. (Date Added: 2010-05-02)
From Pain to Gain Life is a blend of pain and gain. Some think you need pain to appreciate joy and there are songs about "seeing the sunshine through the rain". Whether this balance of joy and pain is desirable is not really important. What is important is that we accept Jesus' words "In this world you will have trouble" (John 16:33). Much of the trouble is of our own making as Proverbs 19:3 shows; "A mans own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the Lord."
There is however trouble and pain that are no fault of our own and these may have a devastating effect on our lives. We may be born into poverty and brokenness or, perhaps worse, spiritual ignorance which leads to destruction in this world and the next.
The good news is that despite circumstances the Lord is more than able to turn things around, provided He has our co-operation. (Date Added: 2010-04-28)
One Generation to the Next (Part 2) We spoke last week about parents choosing and strongly directing their children into faith in the Lord Jesus. This is true and God's calling on all parents. We make choices of all kinds for our children yet we have abdicated directing them into faith. This has been a grave sin.
However the adage "you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink" is abundantly true. Even though faith can be taught, it is mostly caught. They will catch it from my words spoken to them but mostly from my actions towards them and the people around us. (Date Added: 2010-04-20)
One Generation to the Next The family is the most violent place on the face of the earth. Most murders, sexual abuse and battery take place in the home. What are we to do? Lock up all the offenders? Prisons are full and what of the loss of income and family structure with all these offenders removed? A deeper solution is needed. Families need to become a safe, loving and Spirit filled place once again. This can happen when the Lord is brought back into the family. (Date Added: 2010-04-13)
He is your Life !!! Easter 2010 This Resurrection Day is the day creation has waited for since God said:
"And for Adam and his wife the LORD God made coats of skins, and clothed them. .... Behold, the man has become as one of Us, to know good and evil. And now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever, therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he had been taken." (Genesis 3:22,23) - Man could not have the tree of life until his sin had forever been paid for; - The life that was Adam's was lost through his disobedience and only God could restore that life to him; - Animal sacrifices continue until man accepts the ONE sacrifice of Jesus. To Crown a King The Triumphant Entry The account of Palm Sunday is as real and alive today as it was two thousand years ago. Jerusalem and the surrounding country lived in fear, poverty and oppression and all sides longed for peace, prosperity and alas, victory. The Jews were as far away from the Romans as they are away from the Palestinians today. Only the boot of human power is on the other foot. (Date Added: 2010-03-28)
