Breaking Chains

by Erik Momsen

The news yesterday announced that one in six South Africans is effected by mental illness.  I would say that the case is six out of six.  In our hearts and minds we are not what the creator intended us to be.  The image and likeness He created in us has, to a greater or lesses extent, been tarnished.  We see this in Genesis 3 where they hid themselves from God, confess fear and shame.  All prime manifestations of mental dis-ease.

Let us agree that at some point in the past, or even now, we struggle with inner turmoil.  We know there are aspects of our lives that are holding us back.  Paul says "let us lay aside every weight (burden) and the sin which so easily besets us , and let us run with patience the race that is set before us," (Hebrews 12:1)

There is a positive side for us in this.  Some don't even know that they have emotional and spiritual shortcomings.

Too many are burdened by guilt, hurts, sins and destructive habits and do not experience freedom. We are captive and should be free!

DELIVERANCE TO THE CAPTIVES

"The Spirit of the Lord is on Me; because of this He has anointed Me to proclaim the Gospel to the poor.  He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and new sight to the blind, to set at liberty those having been crushed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." (Luke 4:18,19)

Jesus came to do all these things so why do we not experience them?

THE POWER OF SATAN BROKEN 2K AGO

Satan has been a liar, thief, killer and destroyer for a looooong time.  However at his first move against humanity the Father promises him his future.
"And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." (Genesis 3:15)

 - A battle between Eve's children and satan and his angels.
 - Then God speaks of ONE who will crush his head.

Paul knows this is happening with the first believers.  Christ did it and we continue.
"And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen."
  (Romans16:20).

HOW DO WE RECEIVE WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE

"Therefore since we also are surrounded with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily besets us , and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and sat down at the right of the throne of God.  For consider Him who endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest you be weary and faint in your minds." (Hebrews 12:1-3)
 - Recognise the burdens and sins (ps we are being watched).
 - You have a race to run - a mission.
 - Looking to Jesus.
 - The future vision enables the present pain.
 - Unless you consider Him --- you will weary & faint in mind.

JESUS HAS DONE IT IN HIS FLESH

"Since then the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise partook of the same; that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death (that is, the Devil), and deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.  For truly He did not take the nature of angels, but He took hold of the seed of Abraham.  Therefore in all things it behoved him to be made like His brothers, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of His people.  For in that He Himself has suffered, having been tempted, He is able to rescue those who have been tempted." (Hebrews 2:14-18)

 - He became what we are.
 - In His death He destroyed our sin & death.
 - He will deliver those who are in bondage.
 - He can rescue those being tempted.
