God really loves the World
by Erik Momsen
Walking through the streets of a city of twelve million people I knew God was speaking to my heart and saying, "I love this city". It is only now I remember that one of my favorite worship song, "God of this City", was written in this city. Even more strange is that only about 1% of this city believe in Jesus Christ. Does this make Jesus obsolete? No, it just means that this city does not know how much God loves them.
"For God so love the world, that he gave his one and only Son ... " (John 3:16)
I was in Bangkok and knew again how great and important God's love is. We have no idea how big this truth is. In fact we don't know how much God loves us BUT as we discover this truth we are changed.
"... 'Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,' nor has it entered into the heart of man, 'the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.' But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit ..." ( 1 Corinthians 9:9,10)
YOU HAVE TO KNOW HOW MUCH YOU ARE LOVED
The only thing that matters is God's love. John Lennon sang "All we need is love" and he was correct even though I don't think he was talking about God.
When we discover this truth our lives and eternity changes. John. the one Jesus loved, writes ;
"How great is the love the Father has lavished (dedoka) on us, that we should be called the children of God. And that is what we are ... " (1 John 3:1)
God loves us first. Always has and always will. God lavished (dedoka) His love on us. It is the same word used in John 3:16 - God gave his one and only Son. God lavished his Son on us.
Jesus praying in the garden again describes the "lavishing" (giving without measure) He and the Father are doing.
"For you granted Him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given Him." (John 17:2)
- Authority without measure
- Eternal life without measure
- Saints without measure
I had a vision a while ago. I number of boys were loaded into the back of an open truck on the way to a soccer game. Not the safest practice and I asked for the Lord's protection over them as they drove away.
In an instant I saw an accident and a number of boys lying injured and bleeding. At that moment I saw the different values of those boys. Some were unknown, uncared for and unloved. No one was concerned for them. Others had loving, praying, caring parents and friends lavishing love and care over them.
I then knew that our value is dependent on who loves us. Some people are unloved by the world and therefore have little value. The greatest truth and wonder is that God loves all deeper than that caring doting mother.
I am loved by the Maker of the universe and hence I have immeasurable value.
WE LOVE BECAUSE HE LOVED US FIRST
Paul writes us an amazing summary of what love does. When we know we are loved by God we WILL love this way.
PATIENT - KIND
NOT ENVIOUS - BOASTFUL - PROUD - RUDE - SELF SEEKING - ANGRY - REMEMBERING OF WRONGS - REJOICE IN EVIL ----
BUT ----- REJOICE IN TRUTH - PROTECTS - TRUSTS - HOPES - PERSEVERES - NEVER FAILS
