Interceding for the Nations

by Erik Momsen

Have you ever driven through a squatter camp or noticed the increase of drunkenness on the streets?  We might shake our heads with pity, but that is only an outward sign of the death that is at work in every human heart.

One man might be drunk with cheap wine but another drunk with some other more hidden and even more destructive sin.  One is destroying his earthly body while another is destroying the heavenly body that God has planned for him.  Did Jesus not describe the most upright citizens of his day as 'white washed graves"?  God does not judge the externals but the secrets of men's hearts.  The truth is that the secrets of the heart soon bear fruit in day to day life.

I pray that you have a revelation of how different this world would be if it were not for sin.  Once you get a glimpse of the "Kingdom Come" you will long for the Kingdom to start creeping into every heart on the face of the earth so that His "will be done on earth as it is in heaven"

Habakkuk promised: "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the water covers the sea." (Habakkuk 2:14)

Jesus told us that when we speak to:

Our Father in heaven
(recognise) hallowed be Your name
(ask Him to let) Your kingdom come
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven

When I was first filled with the Spirit a flame was lit that burns to see His will done on earth as it is in heaven.  I know it seems almost impossible that earth could be anything like heaven but Jesus opened His work on earth with a message of hope:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom to the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour."
(Luke 4:18).

We pray - "Let your Kingdom come".
We pray - "Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven".

We get moved by the suffering of humanity and
We start believing that God has an favourable year.

Would Jesus have told his disciples to pray for something that was completely and utterly out of reach?  Was he telling them just to feel the hunger for a new world order but without any possibility of God granting a greater or lesser measure of it?  He was telling them to pray that earth would be more like heaven.

"I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none." (Ezekiel 22:30).

Somehow the wrath and blessing of God upon the world is dependant on our intercession.  We are called a nation of priests.  It is our task to plead the forgiveness of the world.  The Lord is looking for people who will increasingly give themselves to the labour of praying for the salvation of the world.  As more and more men and woman come to know the glory of the Lord, things must begin to change.

The problem is we have lost faith, have no hope and do not love.
  - Faith that God can go it.
  - Hope in his salvation and not some political scheme or economic endeavour.
  - Love for people who suffer in their and other people's sin.

Andrew Murray described the state of the church.  Isaiah 62 also described how God's watchmen act and the hand of God moving.

God is calling you to cry out for the nations.
