Sons to Fathers - Daughters to Mothers

by Erik Momsen

A prominent theme in the thinking of Christians in the past few decades has been the topic of fathering, or the lack thereof.  This is relevant in light of the breakdown of this function in society and the terrible results.  Fewer and fewer children around the world have good fathers and this situation impacts greatly on each generations spiritual and psychological health.  It is also a downward spiral with less and less modeling of good fathering taking place and the percentage of the unfathered increasing.

We tell men to be good fathers, but so many have never seen one.  We give them books and seminars but this does not provide the heart transplant that is needed.  I want to suggest that even having had a good father, a man might not have had this heart transformed.  For many men it is too late to be fathered and the sermons don't work so we have a devastating dilemma.

The Father in heaven does say "he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the sons, and the heart of the sons to their fathers" (Malachi 4:6) but the question remains how He will do it?  Is it through telling men to be good fathers or by providing the most awesome model of a Son?

BE A SON TO BE A FATHER

The passage in Malachi 4:6 is often understood to mean that God will first turn the hearts of fathers, they will become Godly and then the hearts of the children will be changed.  I see no problem with this but it is not my overwhelming experience.  I have seen more children touched by God and then having a life changing effect on parents.  The statistics on conversion rates in the world bears testimony to this fact.

We do not have to read Malachi 4:6 as a "fathers first" thing.  I don't believe the passage says this.  God will turn hearts of father and children.

THE UPSIDE DOWN KINGDOM

The world likes to think from top to bottom but God mostly things upside down.  A prime example is Jesus saying, "I did not come to be served but to serve ..." Mark 10:45.  He also said those who are first will be last and to save one's life one had to lose it.

HOW ABOUT BECOMING A GOOD FATHER BY BECOMING A GOOD SON?

I want to suggest that this is the only way to do it.  What you sow you will reap and what you honour you will receive (Matthew 10:41)

A COMMANDMENT WITH A PROMISE

The fifth commandment reads; "Honor your father and mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you"  (Genesis 20:12).

Paul also notes that it is the first commandment with a promise.  The promise is that if you are a good son you will live long ...... enough to be a good father?????

JESUS THE SON & FATHER

The description of the Messiah in Isaiah 9:6 is perplexing.

"For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be on His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.".

Jesus' names are:
child - Son - governor - counselor - God - Father - Prince
He is the Son reflecting the Father - showing the full nature of the Father.

If Jesus does anything, it is show us the Father.  By being the ultimate Son be shows us what it is to know and become like the Father.  Without this ultimate example of the perfect Son we would not know the Father.  We receive the "Spirit of sonship .. and cry Abba Father". (Romans 8:15)

"He who receives me receives the one who sent me." (Matthew 10:40)

BECOME A GOOD SON NOW

We are called to follow Jesus to be real children of God - real sons to our fathers and Father in heaven.  A real repentance from rebellion to our earthly and Heavenly Father.  Healing is at hand.  It started with the Son and there now needs to be a revelations of the sons of God.
