Yoke Easy, Burden Light
(This is no free for all)
by Erik Momsen
I know a way to be care free and at peace with yourself and the world. I did not say that I have attained all of this, but I have a lot more than I had some time ago. It is true that many millions of people around the world are weary and burdened. This condition does not depend on our economic, educational or social status. The rich and the poor are burdened. Often the rich and the poor are both burdened by not having enough. Enough is never enough when you do not have peace.
REST FOR THE WEARY (Matthew 11:25-30)
One of the fastest growing industries is the tourism and leisure industry. People are dying to get away. This proves that people are weary. They are even weary of buying more things, so they’ll buy some rest and relaxation.
Jesus gives the simple answer to our burdens -
He shows the "little ones" their Father.
v.25 The Father has hidden some things from the "wise" and revealed them to the "little children".
- it is hidden from the "worldly wise".
v.27 Only the Son knows this secret - the Father - and reveals The Father to those He chooses.
The Presence of the Father through Jesus gives rest.
v.28 Jesus says, "come to me all who are weary and burdened - Only I can give you the Father - this is your rest".
Israel knew this even when they left Egypt.
"My presence will go with you and I will give you rest." (Exodus 33:14)
WE ARE WEARY OF WALKING WITHOUT THE FATHER.
ONLY JESUS GIVES US THE PRESENCE OF GOD TO WALK IN STRENGTH.
REST IS SALVATION IN THIS LIFE AND THE NEXT.
"TAKE MY YOKE"
A yoke is a tool which directs an animal. Jesus is inviting us to voluntarily take on His rule over our lives. It might seem a risk but ...
v. 29 "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me".
This yoke denotes submission, ownership and obedience. It gives in return peace, protection and direction for our lives.
REST IN THIS LIFE AND THE NEXT
In Luke 10:20 Jesus precedes the "revealed to the little ones" passage with the words;
"rejoice that your names are written in heaven".
Those who take the "Yoke" are those whose names have been written in heaven.
Those who take on the "yoke" also start obeying. This however should not be a struggle in our own strength and will.
"And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God." (1 John 5:3-5)
- John confirms that discipline is not a burden.
- but in fact brings peace, protection and direction.
- we can overcome the world - i.e. defeat sin.
- sin is defeated though "Faith".
- "Faith" in the presence and protection of the Father.
- "Faith" is the tool that releases the presence of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.
- it is the relationship with the Father that brings eternal life and the power to overcome sin.
Only in placing our necks in the Yoke of Jesus by (1) believing in Him do we (2) Find the Father and (3) find the peace, rest and protection that we are looking for.
"Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you." (Psalm 116:7)
