If God can't change me, No-one can
by Erik Momsen
The world desperately wants change because we know that so much is wrong. The World Economic Forum met because the world's economics are wrong. In the last couple of years we have seen World Conferences on Racism because peoples' hearts are hateful. Conferences on corruption are held and even in the States there have been new calls for real democracy.
On the personal front people want renewed bodies, new temperaments and clean consciences. Our reaction is strict diets, rigorous workout regimes, public T.V. confessions and gratitude journals. We are trying hard to change ourselves and our world but it only seems to get worse.
Christians especially desire to see goodness in themselves and in the world but we are mostly disappointed. Christians have the Word and the Spirit enticing us to perfection, but we fail.
This failure to live up to our own standard of goodness leads us to despair. Stephen Brown writes "The problem with the church is that we have started with the law and ended with disobedience". We should have "started with freedom and ended with obedience".
He says: "Law leads to guilt, guilt leads to struggle, struggle leads to failure, failure leads to more guilt, more guilt leads to antinomianism (rejection of law), antinomianism leads to apostasy (denial of Christ), apostasy leads to unbelief. Out of unbelief flow anger and hardness of heart."
However: "Love that makes you free leads to guilt. Guilt leads to confession. Confession leads to more forgiveness. Total forgiveness leads to worship. Worship leads to faithfulness."
JOHN LENNON WAS 'RIGHT'
He said, "all you need is love", but probably didn't have the Love of God in mind. God’s Love created the universe, sustains it and will transform it. The first and last thing that we must know is that GOD LOVES US.
"To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints." (Romans 1:7)
"Be imitators of God therefore, as dearly loved children." (Ephesians 5:1)
"Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, cloth yourselves with ......" (Colossians 3:12)
"For we know brothers, loved by God, that he has chosen you ... you became imitators of us and of the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 1:4,6)
"Brothers loved by the Lord, because from the beginning He chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth." (2 Thessalonians 2:13)
"To those who are called, who are loved by God the Father and kept by Christ." (Jude 1)
LOVED BY GOD, CALLED TO GOD, TO BE LIKE GOD
BY THE TRUTH & THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT
THERE’S NO LAW TO JUDGE YOU (Colossians 2:6-17)
DON’T GO BACK TO THE LAW
"See to it that no one take you captive ... (to) human traditions and the basic principles of the world rather than Christ." (v.8)
GOD HAS DONE THIS FOR YOU
"You have been given the fullness of Christ." (v.10)
"You were circumcised in the putting off of your sinful nature ... done by Christ." (v.11)
"God made you alive with Christ." (v.13)
THE LAW IS DEAD
"He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the written code ... nailing it to the cross." (v.13)
WE HAVE A NEW LAW OF THE SPIRIT
"Since you have been raised with Christ set your hearts on things above." (3:1)
- not on your failure
"Be imitators of God therefore, as dearly loved children ... Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:1,17,18)
- you are loved - you are free of the Law - set you eyes on the Spirit
- He will complete the work He started.
THE LAW - ACTS AS A LIST OF YOUR FAILURES.
THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT - ACTS AS A LIST OF PROMISES
