The Gifts of God
by Erik Momsen
Many gifts will be given at this time of year but almost all will perish. The gifts God gives are true gifts and many will last for ever. These gifts bring true joy and peace.
OUR LIFE & LABOR & LONGING FOR ETERNITY
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, ... Also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God. (Ecclesiastes 3:11,13)
Behold, that which I have seen to be good and proper is for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labor, in which he labors under the sun, all the days of his life which God has given him; for this is his portion. Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God. (Ecclesiastes. 5:18,19)
- when life and labor are not thankfully received as a gift they become a curse.
RESTORED RELATIONSHIP & EVEN DEATH
Yahweh God made coats of skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them. Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he put forth his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever...” (Genesis 3:21,22)
- our friendship with God was destroyed by disobedience - a wall has come between us BUT God even provides ways of covering our shame so we can return to Him. The animal skins symbolize this gift of mercy.
- Death is a mercy gift as we could not continue eternally with this burden of sin and separation from God .
GOD'S ONLY SON IS THE GREATEST GIFT
He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:10-14)
- The Father with the Son and Spirit created the world but the world did not know Him when He came to earth.
- To those who did recognize Him and received Him He gave the gift of adoption.
THE GIFT OF HIS DEATH
Grace to you and peace from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father— (Ephesians 1:3,4)
- His death had brought us life - the payment for sin paid once and for ever.
THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE
Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” ... Jesus answered her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” (John 4:10-14)
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
THE GIFT OF THE INDWELLING SPIRIT
Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Now when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, saying, “Give me also this power, that whoever I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.” But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! (Acts 8:17-20)
- the Holy Spirit, living in us, is the gift promised by the Father.
- it makes our faith an everyday living relationship with God.
THE GIFT OF HIS WORD
THESE GIFTS OF GOD ARE FREE BECAUSE OF THE COMPLETED WORK OF CHRIST ON THE CROSS
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, that no one would boast. (Ephesians 2:8)
The greatest unclaimed prize of all eternity is this free gift of eternal life that is ours if we will just lay down our fake crowns of self control and self sufficiency and acknowledge Jesus as King and God. The only thing He calls us to do is come and follow Him.
