The Word of Life (II)
by Erik Momsen
Words make or break, so how much more could the Words of Jesus bring life to us. Jesus said many things but few words could be as important as his parting words in Gethsemane. He was preparing His disciples for Friday. They were thinking victorious battle by angles against the Romans and He was thinking the cross. We think victory through might while God thinks victory through sacrifice.
Jesus gave them secrets for those who follow Him past the celebration and expectation of victory into the darkness.
Jesus was giving them God's plan for their lives and how they could participate in making God's abundant life to them real.
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer. Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you. “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples." (John 15:1-8)
In this play we have four characters;
* Jesus the vine
* The Father the farmer or vine-dresser
* The disciples the branches
* The Fruit ???
WHAT IS THE FRUIT?
The reason for speaking on this passage is that it kept popping up in the past few weeks and I knew the Lord was wanting me to look at it. Secondly I had a brief discussion with a friend in which He mentioned that he had such a strong desire to go deeper with God, walk closer with Him and have this promised "abundant life". My immediate, but unspoken reaction, was that He needed to get out and be filled with the works of God. You have more of God when you are doing the things of God.
" But He said to them, I have food to eat which you do not know. 33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, No one brought Him anything to eat? Jesus said to them, My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work." (John 4:32-33).
The thing that is supposed to sustain believers is doing the Father's will. This is no accident because we were called to be disciples for this very purpose. We were not called just to stay out off hell. We were called to change the world.
DETAILS ON FRUIT
Too often we think of fruit only as making disciples / evangelism.
Paul tells Titus. "Let our people also learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they might not be unfruitful." (Titus 3:14)
"Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, and has not stood in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is only in the law of the LORD; and in His law he meditates day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivulets of water that brings forth its fruit in its seasons, and its leaf shall not wither, and all which he does shall be blessed." (Psalm 1:1-3)
The basics of Psalm One are clear. Stay away from 'the counsel of the ungodly, the way of sinners, the seat of the scornful' but instead keep your mind on the Word of God. This brings abundant fruit in our lives. The Psalmist promises that "all which he does shall be blessed".
FRUIT = ALL THAT IS DONE TO BRING GOD GLORY (John 15:8)
John 15:16: "I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that fruit should remain."
We are not here to fulfill our dream. We are here to fulfill God's dreams. Our dreams are too small. Our dreams are of boats and planes and temporary things. God's dreams are for ever and we are to produce them.
GOD IS MORE WILLING TO BLESS THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE.
YOU ARE ALREADY CLEAN BY THE WORD & THE BLOOD.
THOSE WHO ARE FRUITFUL IN THE THINGS OF GOD ARE BLESSED IN ALL WAYS.
