Grow 08 - Part 3

by Erik Momsen

Prayer is one of the roots and foundations of our lives, or at least it should be.  Without a deep realization that talking with our Heavenly Father is vital and very effective, our faith will be weak or even die.

I have become aware of how many of my prayers are answered and that God takes my prayers very seriously.  We are however not always aware of this and too often doubt the reality and power of prayer.  If we really believed prayer to be effective we would do it much more.

The book of Daniel is a book of answered prayers.  A book of calling on God and having Him move in mighty ways, for He is sovereign and has complete power over the kingdoms of men (Daniel 5:21).  It is also a book about men who will orientate their lives so that God can use them to preform miracles.

Daniel 1:6-21  - The Daniel Fast
Daniel and his three Hebrew friends sets themselves apart from the rest of the wise men in physical and spiritual ways.  What happens in the body influences the spirit and visa versa.  They make food the issue that will mark them as different.  They know that if they cannot control their table manners, other issues would also go wrong.  They nailed their flag to the pole and said to all, "We belong to the God of Israel".

Food and prayer are linked in the Bible.  Food our most basic need, after breathing, is dedicated to God in fasting.   Hunger is a reminder that we are dependant on God and a sign that we are serious about having God involved in our situation.  For their dedication God rewards them greatly.  PS . Daniel outlasted the Babylonians until Cyrus rules.

"As for these four boys, God gave them knowledge and skill in all writing and wisdom.  And Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. ... And in any matters of wisdom and understanding that the king asked them, he found them ten times better than all the horoscopists and conjurers who were in all his kingdom.  And Daniel continued to the first year of king Cyrus." (1:v17,20,21)

Daniel 2:14 - Nebuchadnezzar's dream.
The wise men of Babylon were to tell the king his own dream and interpret it for him or die.

"At this Daniel went to the King and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him. ... He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven ... During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision."  (v16,18,19)

They needed time and prayed together that God would intervene.

Predicament - prayer - provision - praise

- when we are a little more mature, we praise in the predicament.
The praise of Daniel - the most powerful part of prayer is praise.
"Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and might are His.  And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings.  He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.  He reveals the deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him.  I thank You, and praise You, O God of my fathers, who has given me wisdom and might, and have made known to me now what we asked of You.  For You have now made known to us the king's matter." (2:v20-23)

Daniel 3 - Daniel and friends thrown into the furnace
The God who lives in the hearts of the 4 responds in power to their faith (3:16-18).  God will save us, but if not we will still not worship an idol !!!

"Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent His Angel and has delivered His servants who trusted in Him, and have changed the king's words and has given their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God. And a decree is given by me, that every people, nation, and language, who speak anything amiss against the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, shall be made into mere members, and his house shall be made an outhouse.  Because there is no other God who can deliver in this way." (v28,29)

BASICS OF PRAYER
Prayer and fasting sets us apart for God, and we MUST set apart.
God rewards this dedication - He promises this, "Seek Me ... ".
Prayer takes time and gathering together has power.
God's actions brings praise and praise brings about God's actions.
