Life in the Spirit (1)

From Ephesians

Many millions around the world have felt the Holy Spirit's pull, have grasped the truth of Jesus of Nazareth and have called to the Father of Heaven to make them His children.

The fish have been caught and now we lie on the bottom of the boat wriggling and jumping waiting for the painful but vital process of gutting and cleaning.  We have been caught - now to live the life.

Ephesians is a manual for Christian living giving practical advice for spiritual growth.

 
THE POWER AND THE PLAN IS FROM HIM

 
1) Believers have a position with Christ in "the heavenly realms".

"Heavenly realms" is used five times indicating Paul's understanding that Christ's resurrection & ascension - and our inclusion into that event - is the pivot for:
 - God's agenda is "to bring all things in heaven and on earth under one head, even Christ" (v1:10)
 - and the titanic conflict between Good and evil.

1:3 "Who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ Jesus."
 - we have already been given every spiritual blessing.

1:17 "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints 20 and His incomparable great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of His might strength which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms."
 - Paul continually asks for Spiritual power to change us.

2:6 "And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms ... "
 - our position.

3:10 "His intent was that now through the church the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms."
- the miracle performed in the church, uniting Jew and gentile, would be a sign to the heavenly realm.

6:12 "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood ... against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm."
 - a reminder that things are not what they seem.
 - the heavenly realm dictates what happens on earth.

2) Believers have a new nature.  The old person is still there but the potential is there for immense growth

2:1 "... you were dead in your transgressions and sin ... when you followed the ways of the world and of the spirit of the kingdom of the air ... gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature ... 4 but because of His great love for us ... made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions, it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms ... 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good work which God prepared in advance for us to do."
 - We had a nature of death and sin - now we are created in Christ.
 - the task is now for us to live according to our new nature.

3:16 "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. And I pray that you being rooted and established in love may have power together with all the saints to grasp how wide and long and deep is the love of Christ and to know his love that surpassed knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."
 - to know His love is the first step to being filled to the full measure.

OUR PART IN THE BATTLE FOR HOLINESS

The importance of a Holy, separate life - this is only possible through the constant infilling of the Holy Spirit - without this the flesh dominates.

"Be careful how you live ... making the most of every opportunity for the days are evil ... Do not get drunk on wine ... Instead be filled with the Spirit." (Ephesians 5:15-18)

We must recognise we are in a battle and use the armour. (Ephesians 6:10)

1:7 "redemption ... that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding."

1:13 "Having believed you were marked in him with a seal the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession."

1:17 "I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he called you."

3:12 "In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence."

3:16 "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. And I pray that you being rooted and established in love may have power together with all the saints to grasp how wide and long and deep is the love of Christ and to know his love that surpassed knowledge - that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God."

4:1 "I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received."

4:7 "But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it ... 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, ... prophets ... evangelists ... pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service so the body may be build up, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the Son of God and become mature attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ."
