In all your ways acknowledge Him

by Erik Momsen

Much of the time our lives are not what we want and we keep trying to change things to get it right.  What must be changed is our mind and heart.  We try religion, but what we need is faith.

Religion is a dirty word.  Religion is what we do to try and please God and make Him do what we want.  This is how we naturally think.  But God says;
"... all our righteous acts are like dirty rags." (Isaiah 64:6)

Faith, however, is our attempt to understand the Lord and knowing that if we walk in His ways we will receive what He has planned for His children.

Religion results in actions based on fear.
Faith results in actions based on love.

We sit here not because we fear God and feel an obligation but because we love Him and know He is taking us on to better things.  We sit here because we want to conform our lives to His direction.

"Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - His good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:2)
"(We) ... are being transformed into His likeness." (2 Corinthians 3:18)

Religion is a collection of actions by which to try to bring meaning to our lives.
Faith is the way we think and act in every living moment.
Faith is relating to the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

(Proverbs 3:1-17)

v.1.  "Do not forget" and "keep ... in your heart".  The word of God is to be known and taken to heart.  Faith is a life style.  This is why we teach it to children.

v.2.  God's word prolongs life and brings prosperity.

v.3.  "Love and faithfulness" towards God.  Do we love the things of God and are we faithful to them?  We show our love in our worship of Him, our learning about Him and our service of Him.

v.5.  "Trust in God ... lean not on your own understanding."  God's answers are right, mine are not.

v.6.  See also 16:3  "Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed."   As we start thinking and living faith we start knowing what God wants.  In everything we do we want God's advice and direction.

v.9.  Most of us have trouble with our money.  Either too much or too little.  Not many will admit we have too much.  The root of our problems is that we have not been taught to submit our finances to God.  We do not believe, or if we do we do not give God what belongs to Him.  The "first fruit" which is 10% of the crop belongs to God.  The Bible makes no apology about this.

Obedience, or rather faith, in this area results in God's blessing.

v.11.  God disciplines those he loves.  Who knows it is exhausting disciplining children?  The same thing has to be said over and over again.  Discipline is an act of love and commitment.  We need to embrace the Lord's discipline.  Discipline comes through things that go wrong and even through the Lord's heavy hand upon us.

v.13-16.  Wisdom is the greatest wealth.  The ability to choose between various options.  I think it was Satre who said the greatest pain in human life comes because of choices.  God's gives wisdom to make these choices.

The reward of wisdom is long life & prosperity (peace).  The Hebrew word "Shalom" can be translated "peace" or "prosperity".  One can have money without "Shalom".  Money without peace and prosperity.

A Godly view of life is seen in Proverbs 30:7-9.  This is what Jesus was taking about when he said, "Give us our daily bread."

Two things I ask of you, O Lord; ...
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me my daily bread.
Otherwise I may have too much and disown you and say,
"Who is the Lord?"
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God.
