New Creation

by Erik Momsen

Can a person change and how is it possible?  What does it look like and does it last?

I have just witnessed the wonderful testimony of Adriaan Vlok, the former minister of Safety and Security.  It is not an exaggeration to say the man was born again.  He does not go around waving his hands in the air and saying hallelujah or talking in strange languages but heaven has made its eternal mark of love on his heart.  The word does say that you will know them by their love and it is evident. (1John 4:7)

The world longs for change, individuals for themselves and those close to themselves.  We try medication, counseling and even the surgeon's knife but there is a more proven way.

(A – NOTHEN) (John 3:1-21)

Nicodemus is a man searching.  He comes to Jesus and is told to cut the theological banter.  Jesus tells him he has to be “born from heaven”.  He has to have a renewed heart.  He has to be a changed man.  He has to have heaven in his heart.  Apart from this he will not get to heaven nor will he have the eyes to see how she works.

Nicodemus is doubtful as to the possibility of this.  He is even a little sarcastic.  He questions whether a man can start again.  Can a leopard change his sports?  The answer is no but the creator of the leopard can.

Jesus tells him that earthly man thinks in earthly ways.  Sinful man's thoughts are sinful.  An angry man thinks angry thoughts.  A greedy man is greedy …. you get the idea.  But “that which is born of the Spirit is spirit”.  To think like Heaven, act like heaven, love like heaven you have to have heaven in your heart.  You have to be born from above.  You have to be born of the Spirit.

Jesus acknowledges that this is a miracle. “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes.  So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)
The Spirit works in mysterious ways, enters a man's inner being and starts transforming him.  You don't see Him coming and you cannot control Him.

Nicodemus still does not get it.

"No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.  For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." (John 3:13-17)

Jesus say that He has brought heaven to earth.

Even as Moses brought healing for those dying of snake bite by lifting a bronze snake above the people – so will Jesus bring healing, eternal to those who look to Him on the Cross.  Jesus was lifted onto the cross to defeat the great serpent.

The driving force behind all of this was the Father's love for humanity.

“But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.” (Galatians 6:14-15)

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)

The Cross is the crossroad to all eternity.
All humanity will be divided by the cross.
The Father is calling all lost, broken, hurting humanity to look to his Son on the Cross and be made new.
Paul says through the cross I died to the world and the world died to me.

In Christ I am a new creation – born of heaven – born again with heavens values and power flowing in my mind.
