It is not easy to see the good in the world. You have to look real hard. The news is only bad news and even the Bible says, “woe to the earth and the sea because the devil has gone down to you!” (Revelation 12:12)
The one truth that sticks in my mind and my experience is that “God is Good”. Let me immediately agree with the critics that people are not. We trust in them and they let us down. We put our hope in them and they hurt us. But God is Good.
A YOUNG RELIGIOUS GIT CAME TO JESUS
“Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
“Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”
“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” (Matthew 19:16-21)
THIS IS NOT A STORY ABOUT GIVING MONEY AWAY
THIS IS NOT A STORY ABOUT OBSERVING THE 10
THE SMART ALEC (be this not a sermon … ) IS TRYING TO SHOW OFF
JESUS LET ME SHOW YOU MY GOOD DEEDS = RELIGION
HE PROBABLY OR EVEN POSSIBLY HAD KEPT THE 10
BUT HE STILL DID NOT KNOW GOD
WHY IS THIS NOT ABOUT THE 10 & MONEY?
Jesus wants to knock him off his religious high horse. Jesus has just told him to obey the 10 & and to love all people just in case. When he says, he has, Jesus then tells him to give away all he has. What would have happened if he had DONE this also. Would Jesus now tell him to start whipping himself? Jesus is exposing the futility of “what good thing must I do”.
The answer is however in the following – being close – listening carefully – sitting at Jesus side – resting against his chest. (John 13;25)
DON'T ASK ME ABOUT WHAT IS GOOD – ASK ME WHO IS GOOD!!!
GOD HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD – SOLOMON'S TEMPLE
“ The singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang:
“ He is good;
his love endures forever.”
Then the temple of the Lord was filled with the cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God.
“When Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. The priests could not enter the temple of the Lord because the glory of the Lord filled it. Then all the Israelites saw the fire coming down and the glory of the Lord above the temple, they knelt on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying,
“He is good;
his love endures forever.” (2 Chronicles 5:13,14 & 7:1-3)
They sang “He is good ...” and the presence of God fell
the presence of the God fell and they sang “He is good ...”
My focus can be nothing more nor less than His Goodness
Situations in the world and my life may bring me to the lowest BUT He remains good and His Love endures.
He is the only one to put my trust in – even if mountains fall into the sea.
My salvation – eternity – sense of wellness is only found in my relationship with God though Jesus.
It is not dependent on my life style and works but on His goodness.
I start experiencing His goodness as it falls on me. I am lifted and am able to live a life of increasing goodness. Because of His goodness I can sow in tears and hold on for the reaping in joy.
