Convict, Counsel, Comfort
by Erik Momsen
The human race is not doing well because we were not intended to walk alone. We were made to be in constant friendship and relationship with the Living God but that is no longer true for the majority. A New Covenant or second chance is however available through the blood and water. Blood and water spilled from the side of Jesus, the Messiah. Blood cleanses the sin and the water of the Spirit fills the lonely soul.
The Holy Spirit is the drink that dying people so desperately need but the Spirit is too often ignored or forgotten. Jesus said;
“The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have rivers of living water flowing from his heart." 39 Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who were believing in him were to receive, because the Spirit was not yet present and Jesus had not yet been glorified." (John 7:38,39)
ANOTHER COUNSELOR COMFORTER
Jesus knows his death is approaching fast and that he will be leaving the disciples. In John 14 to 16 He describes how the Holy Spirit will continue the work on earth.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." (John 14:16,17)
- ANOTHER – one just like Jesus.
- COUNSELOR or advocate – help with the law or really anyone who brings help and comfort.
- “He lives in you”.
“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (John 14:26)
- Constant teaching and guidance is promised by the Holy Spirit
- The fear of walking alone is removed – He will be there to guide
“But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." (John 16:7-12)
- Jesus is no longer on earth but the Spirit is. It is vital for believers to call on the Spirit and honor Him in His work.
The Spirit will do a number of things:
Convict the world of sin
Convict of righteousness
Bring judgment on the evil one
It is not the church or the believers task to convict of sin. We can only bring judgment in this regard. Our task is to witness to the power of the blood and the Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the one who tugs are the human heart about his condition and directs him to the Hope in Christ is death and resurrection
The Holy Spirit also convicts us that righteousness only comes from God and is a gift that cannot be earned (Romans 1:17, 3:21,22). The Holy Spirit also brings us a wonderful conviction that we are righteous in Christ.
The Holy Spirit bring us conviction that the evil one is defeated and condemned. The Spirit gives us confidence in the victory of Christ.
The Spirit of the power of God on earth for the victory that Jesus won 2000 years ago. We will counsel, comfort, convict, heal, guide protect, bring victory, break oppression …..
