Faith of Jesus

by Erik Momsen

Some have it, many do not. It strengthens and wanes.  It is of greater value than gold ( 1 Peter).  It is a great mystery.  It is especially a gift or rather a pneumaticos – activity of spirit or The Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:1).

Faith is not something that can be fathomed by the human mind in a logical manner.  It is something that drops into the spirit and can be looked into by the mind of that spirit.

It is helpful to look at how Jesus sees it and how he uses the word faith.

The New testament uses the word faith 234 times.  I count 8 times in the Gospels where Jesus says they have “little faith” (Matthew 6:30, 8:26, 14:31, 16:8, 17:20, Luke 4:40, 8:25, 12:28).  I count 13 times where Jesus says “your faith has …. (made you well, caused your forgiveness etc.) (Matthew 9:2,22,29 15:28, 21:21, Mark 2:5,5:34, 10:52, Luke 5:20, 7:50, 8:48, 17:19, 18:42)

When Jesus saw their faith, he told the paralyzed man, "Son, your sins are forgiven."  Now some scribes were sitting there, arguing among themselves, "Why does this man talk this way?  He is blaspheming!  Who can forgive sins but God alone?"  At once, Jesus knew in his spirit what they were saying to themselves.  "Why are you arguing about such things among yourselves?" he asked them.  "Which is easier: to say to the paralyzed man, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, pick up your mat, and walk'?  But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.  Then he told the paralyzed man, "I say to you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home!"
(Mark 2:5)

  -  Jesus saw – determination, struggle, commitment, desperation = FAITH.
  -  Why does he say “Your sins are forgiven”?

The foundational problem in the world is sin.
if you remove / forgive sin all other problems disappear.
Jesus also wants to prove – through healing power – that he can forgive sins i.e. a God only task.

But Jesus was in the back of the boat, asleep on a cushion.  So they woke him up and asked him, "Teacher, don't you care that we're going to die?"  Then he got up, rebuked the wind, and told the sea, "Calm down! Be still!"  Then the wind stopped blowing, and there was a great calm.  He asked them, "Why are you such cowards?  Don't you have any faith yet?"  Overcome with fear, they kept saying to one another, "Who is this man?  Even the wind and the sea obey him!"
  (Mark 4:38-41)

  -  They had already seen a number of miracles ???
  -  When they get it that he is the son of God – they will have faith.

“His disciples asked him, "You see the crowd jostling you, and yet you ask, 'Who touched me?'"  But he kept looking around to see the woman who had done this.  So the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came forward fearfully, fell down trembling in front of him, and told him the whole truth.  He told her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well.  Go in peace and be healed from your illness." (Mark 5:31 -34)

  - Just to be near – just to touch Him – what other hope did she have?

The disciples still do not understand His power.
It is the FAITH again that causes the healing.

Many people sternly told him to be quiet, but he started shouting even louder, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"  So Jesus stopped and said, "Call him!"  So they called the blind man and told him, "Have courage!  Get up.  He's calling you."  He threw off his coat, jumped up, and went to Jesus.  Then Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?  "The blind man told him, "Rabbouni, I want to see again."  Jesus told him, "Go.  Your faith has made you well."  At once the man could see again, and he began to follow Jesus down the road. (10:48 -52)

He was not deterred by a crowd.
What do you really want?  God is asking you to be specific !!!
Note he follows Jesus.

"Have faith in God! …  Whenever you stand up to pray, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours. … forgive whatever you have against anyone, ..."  (Mark 11:20-26)

CONVICTION COMES FROM HEARING (faith comes by hearing).
