“Delayed hope makes the heart ill, but fulfilled longing is a tree of life.” (Proverbs 13:12 )
Shattered dreams and misplaced hopes are the recipe for all kinds of brokeness and even a core of harmful behaviour.
South Africa has hoped for a better future. This has not happened for most and anger and violence erupts. The youth have hoped for bright career opportunities but the old men have feathered their beds and the youth dissipate.
There are many things that make people “lose heart” and lose hope. People place their hope in a government, the economy, their wealth and education and even in their family. There is a warning light flashing for us right here.
WHERE IS OUR HOPE?
“No king is saved by the size of his army, no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the Lord: He is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. … May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord even as we put our hope in you." (Psalm 33:16-22)
David knew that this world is without hope. If we look to the power bases of the world we will be disappointed. Armies, security services and financial institutions cannot give the deep securing hope we desire.
- God looks out for those who look to Him.
- We look to Him because of His unfailing love. It is the bond of love between us and God that we are held. “Because he loves me, says the Lord, “I Will rescue him, for he acknowledges my name.” (Psalm 91:14)
- We hope in the unchanging nature of God – His nature is love towards anyone who will accept it.
OUR HOPE IS BASED ON …...
“But we want each of you to continue to be diligent to the very end, in order to give full assurance to your hope. Then, instead of being lazy, you will imitate those who are inheriting the promises through faith and patience. For when God made his promise to Abraham, he swore an oath by himself, since he had no one greater to swear by. He said, "I will certainly bless you and give you many descendants." And so he obtained what he had been promised, because he patiently waited for it. For people swear by someone greater than themselves, and an oath given as confirmation puts an end to all argument. In the same way, when God wanted to make the unchangeable character of his purpose perfectly clear to the heirs of his promise, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by these two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to prove false, we who have taken refuge in him might be encouraged to seize the hope set before us. That hope, firm and secure like an anchor for our souls, reaches behind the curtain where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone on our behalf, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:11 -20)
BECAUSE OF HOPE WE PERSEVERE & BEHAVE.
FAITH & PATIENCE WORK TOGETHER – TOWARDS THE HOPE.
ABRAHAM WAS THE MAN OF FAITH BUT ALSO OF PATIENCE.
HOPE IS BASED ON THE
- UNCHANGABLE PURPOSE OF GOD.
- UNCHANGABLE CHARACTER OF GOD.
ALSO ON THE
- UNCHANGABLE LOVE OF GOD.
- UNCHANGABLE PROMISE OF GOD.
THE ANCHOR FOR OUR SOULS IS BASED IN GOD.
--- NOT THE STORMS OF THE WORLD.
WE HAVE TO FORCE OURSELVES AWAY FROM LOOKING AT THE PROBLEM AND FOCUS OUR EYES ON GOD'S PROMISE, PURPOSE, NATURE, LOVE.
