In the Name of Jesus
by Erik Momsen
Jesus so often says “in my name” or “in the Father's name” and the disciples continue to say “in the name of Jesus”. Paul even says do all things in the name of Jesus (Colossians 3:17).
There seems to be a secret to the name of the one and only Son of God.
“And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21)
The name Jesus means “The Lord saves” or “The Lord gives victory” and the early disciples knew there was power in His name.
Jesus saves and gives victory over sin in this life and the next.
AUTHORITY IN THE NAME
In Revelation the first words Jesus say is ”I am the Alpha and the Omega”. He is the first and last letter of the alphabet. He is the beginning and the end. Jesus is everything. As we more fully understand this and rest our lives in this truth we will see His victory come.
His last words in Matthew are that all authority, power, right … in heaven and on earth is His and therefore his disciples must go and make other disciples and bring them under (baptise) the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Jesus is saying that He has ALL authority and His disciples must go in this authority and power (name) and bring all things under His authority. The disciples have the right to use His name.
THE POWER OF THE NAME
“Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” (Acts 3:6)
“... by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, ... by Him this man stands here before you whole. … Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:10-12)
“ …. stretch out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” (Acts 4:30)
“And he spoke boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Hellenists, but they attempted to kill him.” (Acts 9:29)
“But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.” (Acts 16:18)
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11)
ASK IN HIS NAME
“And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” (John.14:13,14)
“Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. … 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the Father for you." (John 16:23,24,26)
HOW TO ASK?
“This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another." (John 15:12-16)
- Love each other AS I love.
- Lay down your life for each other.
- You are my friends if you lay down your life.
- Jesus does call us friends – Ps He has laid down His life.
- Jesus chose us – to bear fruit – make other friends of Jesus.
- IN LIGHT OF THIS YOU WILL ASK IN HIS NAME.
- PS – JUST REMEMBER – LOVE ONE ANOTHER.
