From Darkness to Light

by Erik Momsen

Reading Charles Finney's description of how God dealt with him and the many that God reached through Finney, I am struck by the dramatic and rapid change that took place in the lives of people.  It reminds me of Biblical descriptions of the conversion of people.  We are again seeing this kind of activity of the Holy Spirit in many parts of the world

God describes this change in our lives as a movement from darkness to light.

"...A people belonging to God that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9)

A while ago (and this is the reason for this sermon) I was with a few young adults (thirty something's).  Very pleasant young people and enjoyable to be with, but in an instant the Lord placed a word in my heart.  The question was; "Where is the light and joy in their faces?"  They were not unhappy or particularly troubled but they did not have that spark that is so visible on the faces of the followers of Jesus .

LIGHT IN THE HEART OF BELIEVERS

Since the first rebellion of humanity, we have been hiding from God.  We feel ashamed and for most can only do our shameful acts in the dark.  Cockroaches cannot stand the light.

God's however by his mercy and grace breaks through and tells us that his Love covers over a multitude of sin for the sake of Jesus.

He place His Spirit in us with a new hope, love faith and direction.

"For God who said; Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus." (2 Corinthians 4:6)

"And we who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18)

TWO KINDS OF DARKENED FACES

Those who have never seen the light of God think differently, have different life goals and see sin differently.
"Sin is not so bad.  Everybody does it.  God, if he is watching won't mind."

In those who God's light has shone, the reaction to sin should be different.  We know it cripples, darkens separates us from God and results in God's blessing not being poured out.

"For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." (1 Peter 3:12)

Many Christians walk around with darkened faces.  They previously had the light of Jesus on their faces but now it is dim.  One can still find the light of Christ if one scratches but they are ashamed and have lost their confidence.

Darkened Christians hide behind the fact that they are saved.  But they forget that God demands that his children grow up and become mature and holy.  The early Christians were called saints, "hagios" which indicated a separation from sin and a holiness.  Are we still saints?

HOW TO GET THE SHINE BACK

   1.  Even Christians need to repent. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
   2.  We need to do the basics of the faith.
   3.  We need to be in his presence to reflect His light.
   4.  Holiness is a day by day sacrifice.
   5.  Holiness is a process that produces fruit.

"And we who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18)
