THE Faith

by Erik Momsen

Many speak about faith and this could be faith in crystals or some guru or personal development trainer.  Too many also believe that faith is just a feeling and has no real definite content.  You can basically believe what you want to.

This is strange in that almost everything in the universe has a definite answer but they claim this is not true for issues of faith.  In math one plus one is two but this does not apply in issue of faith.  The universe is an ordered place but there is no order in faith.

The faith of the Bible and hence of Christianity is a specific and defined concept.  The Apostle Paul often talks about “the Faith”.  He saw it as a very unique thing.
“Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” (Ephesians 4:13) .
Paul had very specific expectation about the faith he was preaching.

A VERY SPECIFIC FAITH

Paul's faith was not in faith itself but faith in a person!  He reminds the early church about where their faith lies.

“Therefore, because I have heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,”
Ephesians 1:15

“Because we have heard about your faith in the Messiah Jesus and the love that you have for all the saints”
, Colossians 1:4

It is amazing how the love for God and fellow man run constantly through the pages of the Bible.  It is also not surprising that he specifies love for the saints.  It is the gift of Love through the Holy Spirit that unites us to God and the saints in a way that is not common to all humanity.

TO KNOW HIM IS TO LOVE HIM - TO KNOW HIM IS TO HAVE FAITH IN HIM

“Now before faith came about, we were held in custody and confined under the Law in preparation for the faith that was to be revealed.  And so the Law was our guardian until the Messiah came, so that we might be justified by faith.  But now that faith has come about, we are no longer under a guardian.  For all of you are God's children through faith in the Messiah Jesus.  Indeed, all of you who were baptized into the Messiah have clothed yourselves with the Messiah.  Because all of you are one in the Messiah Jesus, a person is no longer a Jew or a Greek, a slave or a free person, a male or a female.  And if you belong to the Messiah, then you are Abraham's descendants indeed, and heirs according to the promise.” Galatians 3:24-29

 -  Faith in the Messiah has replaced the old way.
 -  The law tried to look after us – keep us in check.
 -  Now faith in the Messiah is what justifies us.
 -  Faith in the Messiah completes our adoption.
 -  Baptism into the Messiah gives us His nature.
 -  We look like Him, talk like Him, walk like Him.
 -  Our relationship with Jesus teaches a new way of being and doing.
 -  Though the Messiah, God's ancient plan of a nation of faith, through Abraham, is completed and the blessings bestowed.
- There is a completely new relationship between me and God & between me and fellow believers

“I pray that he would give you, according to his glorious riches, strength in your inner being and power through his Spirit, and that the Messiah would make his home in your hearts through faith.  Then, having been rooted and grounded in love, you will be able to understand, along with all the saints, what is wide, long, high, and deep― that is, you will know the love of the Messiah―which transcends knowledge, and will be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16 -19)

Through faith in Him he invades my heart by His Spirit.
This gives me a strength & power.
His love becomes my root & foundation.
His love is beyond measure.
This faith which leads to love opens me to the fullness of God.

I can pray great & powerful prayers because I know this Mighty Spirit who loves me & fills me with all the fullness of God.
