Hope for your Hopelessness!!!

by Erik Momsen

Even the predictive text program spat out “Hopelessness” after I got to "hop … ".   Someone asked why there were so few "white kids" in my school.  I replied they had the means to fly away.  In my creeping despair I snapped that I would too if God allowed me.  (By the way, my enquiring friend is about 20 shades darker than I and he also wanted that ticket).

But then the greener pasture might have been Christ Church . . .

My often muse Mr Bono sings;
"When you look at the world
What is it that you see?
People find all kinds of things
That bring them to their knees"

What brings you to your knees?  What brings your hopelessness?

They say the pain of losing a child is the loss of a future.  The loss of hope we had for that child.  It is the same pain parents experience when seeing their child walking a path that leads to the loss of a blessed life.

Some are brought to their knees by personal failure.  I walked quite a few years of hopelessness after being washed from pilots course.  Life carries on but a dream has died and the future is empty.

Some face hopelessness as result of lost love.  The person you were going to spend your life with is no longer part of that dream.

Some lose hope because their very life is threatened though dis-ease. You might just not have as much time as your hoped for.

I lose hope when I look at the world.

"When there's all kinds of chaos
   And everyone is walking lame
You don't even blink now, do you?
   Don't even look away" (Bono)

GOD, WHAT DO YOU SEE?

“No king is saved by the size of his army, no warrior escapes by his great strength.  A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save.  But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.  We wait in hope for the Lord: He is our help and our shield.  In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. … May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord even as we put our hope in you." (Psalm 33:16-22)

David knew that this world is without hope.  If we look to the power bases of the world we will be disappointed.  Armies, security services and financial institutions cannot give the deep securing hope we desire.

Paul gives us the same analysis.
“At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise.  You had no hope and were in the world without God”. (Ephesians 2:12)
 -  lost in a Godless world without hope.

HOPE IN THE LORD – WHY & HOW?

"He will not quarrel or shout, and no one will hear him shouting in the streets.  He will not snap off a broken reed or snuff out a smoldering wick until he has brought justice through to victory.  And in his name the gentiles will hope.  Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and unable to talk was brought to him.  Jesus healed him so that the man could speak and see." (12:19)

HOPE COMES TO THE WORLD = GENTILES
JESUS SUSTAINS THE BRUISED
JUSTICE WILL RESULT IN VICTORY
BLIND, DUMB & INSANE – hopeless – then a new hope in Jesus

"I have the same hope in God that they themselves cherish―that there is to be a resurrection of the righteous and the wicked."  (Act 24:15) – RESURECTION IS A CORNERSTONE OF HOPE

"But since we belong to the day, let's be sober.  We must put on the breastplate of faith and love, and the hope of salvation as a helmet." (1Thessalonians 5:8) – GOD SAVES AND HENCE I HAVE HOPE – THE FUTURE WILL BE BETTER

"But now, in union with the Messiah Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah." (Ephesians 2:13) – FROM V 12 – WE ARE CLOSE TO GOD IN XP

FROM Ps 33 – HIS EYES ON US / HIS LOVE / HE DELIVERS / HE SHILEDS / WE REJOICE IN HIM / UNFAILING LOVE ON US

WHEN I LOOK AT THE WORLD (U2)

When you look at the world
What is it that you see?
People find all kinds of things
To bring them to their knees

I see an expression
So clear and so true
That changes the atmosphere
When you walk into the room

So, I try to be like you
Try to feel it like you do
But without you, it's no use
I can't see what you see
When I look at the world

When the night is someone else's
And you're tryin' to get some sleep
When your thoughts are too expensive
To ever wanna keep
When there's all kinds of chaos
And everyone is walking lame
You don't even blink now, do you?
Don't even look away

So, I try to be like you
Try to feel it like you do
But without you, it's no use
I can't see what you see
When I look at the world

I can't wait any longer
I can't wait till I'm stronger
Can't wait any longer
To see what you see
When I look at the world

I'm in the waiting room
I can't see for the smoke
I think of you and your holy book
When the rest of us choke

Tell me, tell me
What do you see?
Tell me, tell me
What's wrong with me?
