What's the Good News?

by Erik Momsen

Have you caught yourself watching the news on TV and having an expectancy?  Perhaps there will be a tax cut or the price of petrol will come down or your least favorite politician was fired – not a regular occurrence in Africa.  I buy the week-end news paper to look for a bargain or a really cheap holiday.  Am I alone in these sentiments?  I am looking for good news.

These are pretty superficial desires compared to hearing the good news that a friend is in remission or a young person has kicked the drug habit.  There are levels of good news.  The question is do we understand the Good News of Jesus?  Could our understanding of the Good News of Jesus perhaps be a little self-centered or even selfish?

JESUS ARRIVES

When Jesus arrives on the scene the first words he utters are;
“The time has come, The Kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news.” (Mark 1:15)
 - The Kingdom is the Good News

Matthew also starts Jesus' preaching with
“From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent for the kingdom of God is near.” (Matthew 4:17).

Luke records Jesus' first sermon as the ultimate good news from Isaiah 61.
“preach good news to the poor”
“proclaim freedom for the prisoners”
“sight for the blind”
“release the oppressed”
“proclaim the Jubilee”

ps --- so much of the Luke sermon was about debt and bondage.  Imagine the greatest worldly good news of the Chinese canceling world debt.

THE GOOD NEWS IS GOD / KING

One of our problems is that we think of ourselves first when we think of the Good News.  My view of reality is very limited and I want the world to be organized around my views.  Very silly!!!

THE GOOD NEWS IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD

The good news is not a collection of goodies that people get when they follow God. The Good news is God ---- full stop.

The Good News is God News!!!

Luke 4:43 "But he told them, 'I have to proclaim the Good News about the Kingdom of Godin other cities, ...'"
Luke 8:1 "After this, Jesus traveled from one city and village to another, preaching and spreading the Good News about God's Kingdom."
Luke 16:16 "The Law and the Prophets remained until John. Since then, the Good News about the Kingdom of God has been proclaimed, and everyone entering it is under attack."
Act 8:12 "But when Philip proclaimed the Good News about the Kingdom of God and about the name of Jesus the Messiah, men and women believed and were baptized."

IF THE GOOD NEWS IS THE KINGDOM – WHAT IS THE KINGDOM?

THERE IS A KING – he is not Caesar or the US president, but Jesus.

THE KING HAS ARRIVED – Jesus dies under the title of Messiah.

THE KING IS STARTING TO RULE - Luke 21:31 “In the same way, when you see these things taking place, you will know that the Kingdom of God is near.”

THE KING TAKES HEARTS - Matthew 13:47 "Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish."

THE KING STARTS HIS RULE ON EARTH - “Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)

THE KING WANTS HIS WILL DONE --- THAT IS GOOD NEWS.

THE KING HAS RETURNED AND WILL TAKE BACK WHAT IS HIS – ONE HEART AT A TIME UNTIL HE RETURNS IN FINALITY.
