Faith in Action
by Erik Momsen
The first book about the church was not called the Faith of the Apostles but the Acts. It is an account of the things God did through people. Much of the Western church has deteriorated into an academic debate and much of the salt and light has gone.
I spent the week with a few hundred doers of the Gospel. Paul might have said this to these people,
“Through faith they conquered kingdoms, administered justice, received promises, shut the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, escaped death by the sword, found strength in weakness, became powerful in battle, and routed foreign armies." (Hebrews 11:33,34)
I spent time with people who have made a real difference in the world not because they are great people but because they got up and did something about a bad situation around them. They did not look to others to fix the problem but they looked to God and He gave them strength.
We need a return to simple faith with actions. Back to the basics that the world around us will understand. Instead of this we confuse them and ourselves with too many words, debates and arguments.
Jesus describes His own people;
"You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can't be hidden. People don't light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people in such a way that they will see your good actions and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)
- If you are true light you WILL shine.
- If you are true salt you WILL preserve and flavour.
- People WILL see your acts of Love.
- People WILL then know your Father is real and praise Him.
WHAT IS STOPPING YOU?
“Therefore, since we surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us through off everything that hinders, and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:1,2)
- Heaven is watching us!!! (see the list in Hebrews 11)
- Something is holding you back --- ?
- Is it a lie or a false teaching --- “you don't have the qualification / money / power / right ….”
- Is it LAZINESS?
- Is it FEAR?
- Is it VISIONLESSNESS? – you have not asked God
- There can be sin that holds you back – repent & be forgiven.
What good does it do, my brothers, if someone claims to have faith but does not prove it with actions? This kind of faith cannot save him, can it? Suppose a brother or sister does not have any clothes or daily food and one of you tells them, "Go in peace! Stay warm and eat heartily." If you do not provide for their bodily needs, what good does it do? In the same way, faith by itself, if it does not prove itself with actions, is dead. But someone may say, "You have faith, and I have actions." Show me your faith without any actions, and I will show you my faith by my actions. You believe that there is one God. That's fine! Even the demons believe that and tremble with fear. Do you want proof, you foolish person, that faith without actions is worthless? … For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without actions is also dead. (James 2:14-26)
FAITH MUST PRODUCE ACTIONS
WITHOUT ACTIONS FAITH IS DEAD & SO ARE WE
WHAT ARE THE ACTIONS?
LOVE – treats everyone with love, respect, mercy.
TIME – give your time to others – visit – invite – gather.
FEED – both the rich & the poor.
CLOTH – both the rich & poor.
TITHE – a command of Jesus (Matthew 23:23) & a strength of the Church.
PRAY 4 VISION …...................... ????????? ....................................
“Let's not get tired of doing what is good, for at the right time we will reap a harvest ―if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have the opportunity, let's practice doing good to everyone, especially to the family of faith. (Galatians 6:9,10)
