That your Joy might be Full

by Erik Momsen

There are many things to complain about.  There are many things to be concerned about.  There are many reasons to focus on the things that suck the life and joy out of us.

Perhaps the final proof of a hopeless, joyless society is when they no longer see the great joy in the birth of a child and put all their energy in blessing this child with all means possible.  This was the state of the Roman empire as it declined.

Richard Wagner the German composer said “Joy is not in things, it is in us.”  We are to celebrate every living being and especially the One Living Being who is the source of all living.

Ezra-Nehemiah is the story of a new beginning, new hope, new joy.  Israel has returned from Babylonian exile and is rebuilding.  Ezra, the priest, reads the Torah for 5 to 6 hours while the people stand and listen.  Something happened in the assembly.  Hearts were moved and Ezra and Nehemiah have to tell the people, “Do not mourn or weep”.  When last has that happened in a modern church?  Hearts are too often just jaded and cool.

Nehemiah tells them; “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared.  This day is a sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!” (Nehemiah 8:10)
 -  Be ready to be a person of joy & celebration – not debauchery.
 -  Feed those who have nothing – this is typical of God's people.
 -  Here and ULTIMATE TRUTH – Joy of the Lord is Strength.
 -  Most people lose heart and lose.
 -  A joyful heart is resilient and keeps fighting for right.

“Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them.” (8:12)

 -  Joy came from knowing God's mind, ways, plans, blessings ...
