Running Aimlessly

by Erik Momsen

Pentecost is the birth of the church and the birth of all ministry.  Jesus starts His ministry after the Spirit fills him and so does the early church.  Without the work of the Spirit there is no work of God on earth.  With our gross self-centredness we too easily make Pentecost about me and the Holy Spirit.  It is rather about the Church and the Spirit.

The Spirit:
 - draws us to Christ
 - convicts of sin
 - enables us to surrender to Christ
 - assures salvation
 - enables us to live victorious life
- understand the Bible
 - pray in spirit
 - witness

Signs of the power of the Spirit will be evident in all these AIMS

AIMLESS OR PURPOSEFUL

Most of the world lives aimless lives.  Their aim is to work to eat and then to eat to work.  Others work to buy stuff and then work to pay it off.

Our aim is to survive this planet with our souls intact and to take as many with us as possible.  Jesus said he came to destroy the work of the evil one (Luke 10:19) and give life in abundance.

Believers do not have the right to sit back and live aimlessly.  The cost is too high.  If we take our eyes off the prize of eternal life for ourselves and others the results will be catastrophic.

1 Corinthians 9:19-27:
19  “To win as many as possible”.
22  “I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some”.
23  “That I may share in its blessing”.
24  Run in such a way as to get the prize.
25  Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.
27  I beat my body and make it my slave so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

Believes must have a deep desire to see people turn to Jesus.  Churches who do not have this aim are missing their commission & PRIZE.

There is strict training to undergo.  Less Bible study and more obedience to the basic things God has told us to do.  We deceive ourselves in thinking another Bible study will do the trick.  Remember the apostles did not even have a Bible and they turned the world around.
“A religion that is pure and stainless according to God the Father is this: to take care of orphans and widows who are suffering, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."
(James 1:27)
The price of sin is too terrible to be taken lightly. Believers are ineffective because of sin.
The antidote to sin is I.D. In Christ / presence of the Spirit / AIM

Ephesians 5:8-20:
8    Live as children of light.
10  Find out what pleases the Lord.
15  Be careful how you live – not as unwise but as wise.
16  Making the most of every opportunity for the days are evil.
18  Do not get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery.  Instead be filled with the Spirit.
20  Always give thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of the Lord Jesus.

TOO MANY BELIEVERS HAVE NOT YET TAKEN BEING A WITNESS AS THEIR NO. 1 AIM -

Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

I believe that because we will not take on this commission we do not walk in the Spirit as we are meant to do.
