Love's the Thing (1)

by Erik Momsen

Being a Christian is sometimes confusing and very often difficult.  A man woke up one Sunday with his wife whispering in his ear, "Its time to get up and go to church".  He replied, "I'm tired and feel a little sick, I don't want to go to church".  His wife replied, "Don't be silly, its getting late and you must get up!".  He said, "I don't like to go to church anymore.  The people are unfriendly, the music is boring and the coffee is cold.  Why must I go?  His wife by now was irritated and snapped.  "You must go.  The people are expecting you and you're the minister!"

Being a Christian can be difficult and tiring but there's one word that sums up the whole thing and drives us on.  That word is Love.  The New Testament uses the word "love" 232 times.  Love is described as the greatest gift (1 Corinthians 13), but it is also the ultimate sacrifice and the driving force of the universe.

The world is desperate for love and a sense of approval that goes with it.  The world will try anything to gain this love.  In it's attempts it gets into all kinds of trouble because it is only in God that we find love, experience Love and live through Love.  As believers we must live by Love as first and last principle.

Without Christ love is "a second hand emotion", as Tina Turner found out. It is in Him that love is real, powerful and creative.

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.  Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.  9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.  10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.  11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.  12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.  13 We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.  14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.  15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God.  16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.  God is love.  Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.  17 In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him.  18 There is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.  The one who fears is not made perfect in love.  19 We love because he first loved us.  20. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.  21 And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother."
(1 John 4:7-21)

 -  "Love comes from God" plus "God is love".
 -  "God showed his love. He sent his one and only Son".
 -  "We love because he first loved us".
 -  "Whoever does not love does not know God".
 -  "If we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us".
 -  "We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit".

LOVE IS OUR CREATOR - God created because He Loves - loves to share, loves to create.  Love gathers all together.

- because of God's great love He died for us.
"It was just before the Passover Feast.  Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father.  Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love." (John 13:1)

 - It was His love that drove Him to the cross.

LOVE IS OUR DRIVING FORCE - it gives us energy - Because of God's great love for us, we are energized to love others.

LOVE IS OUR FOCUS - it tells us what to do and how to do it. Love tells us the difference between right and wrong.

"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love."
(Galatians 5:6)

LOVE IS OUR EFFECTIVE WORK - love is practical.

LOVE FOR OTHERS CONNECTS US TO GOD - our mercy and love for others attracts God's attention and presence.

If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar.

"My children, I will be with you only a little longer. .... "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:33-35)

The world is desperate for love and will only find it in God and when His people display it in their daily lives.  When the lost see the Love of God in ordinary people they will know that this Jesus is worth following, obeying, serving, and giving their lives for.

"Do everything in love." (1 Corinthians 16:14)
