Babel II

by Erik Momsen

Despite the confusing babel around us we must ask what is the true message.  What are the words that keep us sane and focused on a better way of thinking and living.  Peter says of Jesus, "You have the words of life".

A friend has just spent the past year and large amounts of money establishing facilities to build up the people of this nation only to be blocked by Babel, political wrangling and confusion.  He is left angry and confused.  He is asking, "Did God not tell me to do this?"  "Is this not the right and loving things to do?"  The simple answer is that the forces of murder, theft and destruction are ever at work and any Kingdom work will not succeed without a great spiritual battle accompanying the physical work.

Another friend of over twenty years has been part of a movement planting over seven thousand churches in Africa.  He knows, like he knows little else, that there is a spiritual victory to be won before any goodness will take root in a village or a town.  In one town the local people spend large amounts of their little disposable income on 'importing' chillies.  When asked why they don't grow their own they are confused by the question.  Some plants have sprung up, untended, from seeds dropped as the large bags of dried chillies are brought in by 4x4.  Only after a spiritual and mental liberation do they now grow their own chillies.

THE BATTLE IS A BATTLE OF LOVE

Followers of Jesus know the great words he spoke to us but somehow do not understand the depth and power of these words.  We fall back into all types of religious babel when he only told us one thing.

"I have spoken these things to you so that My joy might remain in you and your joy might be full.  This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.  No one has greater love than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.  You are My friends if you do whatever I command you.  No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master does.  But I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.  You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and ordained you that you should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you shall ask of the Father in My name, He may give it to you.  These things I command you, that you love one another. (John 15:11-17)

 -  Where is your joy?  Perhaps His words are forgotten?
 -  Only one command - love as He loves.
 -  No confusion, only very difficult to do.
 -  We are friends of Jesus - not servants - but co-workers.
 -  He is on our side - with us - for us - encouraging us.
 -  He has told us the Father's words - the Father's heart.
 -  He has sent us to bear much fruit - make a difference.
 -  Fruit that will last.
 -  Only the fruit of Love will last.
 -  Imagine - you can ask anything in his name - in His will - in His nature.
 -  Just in case you forget - the One command is LOVE.

The title track of a U2 album released in 2000 says;

And love is not the easy thing
The only baggage that you can bring
Not the easy thing
The only baggage you can bring
Is all that you can't leave behind

You're packing a suitcase for a place none of us has been
A place that has to be believed to be seen

And I know it aches
How your heart it breaks
You can only take so much
Walk on - walk on

Leave it behind
You've got to leave it behind

All that you fashion - all that you make
All that you build - all that you break
All that you measure - all that you feel
All this you can leave behind
