Babel

by Erik Momsen

Different languages, different foods, different values ... so many differences that divide us and set us against each other.

In a late night discussion with some Belgian tourists, lamenting poverty, unemployment, violence, alcohol abuse and political corruption I came away with the revelation that our nation needs new common values.  Since 1994 we do not speak the same "language" - some get very rich while the poor get poorer.  AIDS is a "syndrome", a CIA plot, does not exist, can be stopped with circumcision, condoms, garlic and intercourse with a virgin.  We have done no nation building only party political pandering.  All we do is babel.  There is a phrase that some nations have stumbled upon that is the truth of the ages.  "One Nation under God".  The contrary is however true. Bono sang, "they say the want the Kingdom, but the don't want God in it".

WHY ARE THE NATIONS DIVIDED?

There is a Bible story (Genesis 11) about the origin of the division of nations.  The pride of humanity resulted in God dividing them.  The Bible called the place Babel.

[the following from Wikipedia]

"The Greek form of the name is from the native Akkadian Bāb-ilim, which means "Gate of the god", which summarizes the religious purpose of the great temple towers (the ziggurats) of ancient Sumer (Biblical Shinar). In Genesis 10, Babel is said to have formed part of Nimrod's kingdom. It is not specifically mentioned in the Bible that he ordered the tower to be built, but Nimrod is often associated with its construction in other sources. The Hebrew version of the name of the city and the tower, Babel, is attributed in Gen. 11:9 to the verb balal, which means to confuse or confound in Hebrew. The ruins of the city of Babylon are near Hillah, Babil Governorate, Iraq."

Nebuchadnezzar wrote that the original tower had been built in antiquity: "A former king built the Temple of the Seven Lights of the Earth, but he did not complete its head. Since a remote time, people had abandoned it, without order expressing their words. Since that time earthquakes and lightning had dispersed its sun-dried clay; the bricks of the casing had split, and the earth of the interior had been scattered in heaps."

The Greek historian Herodotus (440 BC) later wrote of this ziggurat, which he called the "Temple of Zeus Belus", giving an account of its vast dimensions. "The already decayed Great Ziggurat of Babylon was finally destroyed by Alexander the Great in an attempt to rebuild it. He managed to move the tiles of the tower to another location, but his death stopped the reconstruction. Since then only the base remains, but it is visible from Google Earth, which places its location at 32.5362583N and 44.4208252E just south of Baghdad.

THE PROBLEM

 -  Nimrod builds a great city Babylon (Genesis 10:10) with a tower called Bab-ilim, "Gate of the god" - and says "we will make a name for ourselves" (11:4)

 -  Alexander the Great desires to make Babylon the centre of his empire like Nimrod. He also dies mysteriously after attempting to rebuild the tower.

 -  Babylon is seen in scripture to be the symbol of rebellion against God and they Hebrews call it Babel - "confusion"

 -  George Bush and baby Bush want to take Baghdad and that on false threats of weapons of mass destruction? The USA goes into the greatest decline of its entire history.

One language results in great nations or political power blocks.  Population size is a precursor to economic, political and military power (USA, China, India, Brazil ...)  Humanity is constantly trying to unite under a new scheme to enhance their power and wealth.  Pride and arrogance is the result which leads to all kinds of sin and suffering.  Humanity constantly tries to unite without God while they believe Satan's lie, "you can be like God" (Genesis 3:5)

ONLY IN CHRIST DO WE SPEAK ONE "LANGUAGE"

Language divides like little else - "I cannot understand you and get through to you".

Language of the Love of God unites all people - "I understand your heart's cry because the Spirit of God is in me".

Differences tire and frustrate us - even cause hurt.

The Spirit of Love looks though the Babel - confusion - into another heart.

ONE LANGUAGE = THE LOVE OF GOD
ONE VALUE = THE LAW OF GOD
ONE GOAL = THE MIND OF GOD
ONE FORGIVENESS = THE CROSS OF XP
ONE FUTURE = UNDER GOD

ONE NATION UNDER GOD

ONLY THE CHURCH HAS THE TOOLS TO SPEAD AND LIVE THIS MESSAGE - WE WANT THE KINGDOM OF GOD STARTING NOW
