Naturally Supernatural (ii)

by Erik Momsen

Most people here today know that the Bible speaks about miracles, healings and the driving out of demons.  Most people here today believe, at a mental level, that miracles, healing and driving out of demons is possible.  Yet very few of us are actively involved in miracles, healings and driving out of demons.  Something is going wrong between the our heads, hearts and hands.

FAITH & FEAR

Much of the time we are just not that convinced that miracles, healings and the driving out of demons are that important or even possible.  Because we don't see much of it we start to doubt.  I get afraid to talk or even think about it because it "probably won't happen".

Our faith is weak because we don't see much, don't read and hear much, and we don't risk much.  The issue of the miraculous recedes to the background and we continue with the mundane.  We stop expecting God to "show up" and we stop living the supernatural lives we see in the Bible and hope for.

IT HAS STOPPED BECAUSE WE HAVE STOPPED

The exodus of Israel gives us a useful illustration of how God works with his people.  Israel only moved when the cloud and fire moved.  We however move when God is not moving and stay when God is moving.  We have stopped watching and listening.

FAITH IS MOVEMENT AT THE RIGHT TIME

The man with the greatest faith in Israel was a man who knew how to listen and do.  He could take orders and give them.

The centurion (Matthew 8:5) came asking for help for his suffering servant.  He realises, "I do not deserve to have you come under my roof" and knew that Jesus could heal with just a command.

He saw authority and power in Jesus and understood how it worked.  Jesus was under the authority of the Father and exercised the Father's authority and power.  If he could just get Jesus to say the word, his servant would be healed.

  • He knew Jesus to have power and authority.

  • He knew he was unworthy of the "gifts of God".

  • His faith was based on knowing Jesus had power and knowing that if Jesus gave the command it would be done.

THE BIG QUESTION FOR YOU & I

  • Does God have the power? - Yes.

  • Am I worthy of His power? - No.

  • Will he do it for me? - Yes or No - BUT listen for the answer.

When He says yes, it is yes. Go and you go.

USE THE TOOLS

When Jesus called the 12, "He gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, he sent them out to preach the kingdom and heal the sick." (Luke 9:1,2)  This same authority and power was given to the seventy two (Luke 10) and to others in Acts and church history.

The power was the ability, and the authority was the right to use it.  As believers we have gifts that are given us by the Spirit and we must learn to discern when we have the authority to use them.

LISTEN AND BELIEVE - LISTEN AND DO - LISTEN AND GO

Jesus was found more in the streets than in the temple.  He lived to bring the broken and suffering back to the Father and heal them of all kinds of hurt.  John Wimber said; 'The meat is on the street', meaning we need to get out and do the gospel.

"Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? ... Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law or because you believe what you heard."  (Galatians 3:2,5)
