Lotto, Porno - Sicko

by Erik Momsen

Great leaders around the world speak of moral regeneration.  By this I think they mean that the plebes must not steal from government and big business, and not be too violent towards each other.  The strange thing is that public broadcasters can in one frame be advocating a form of sexual morality and the next moment be viewing a sexually explicitly advert or movie.  The one hand says stop and the other holds out the sins of the flesh. Paul explains this condition;
".. you must not live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.  They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance of their hearts.  Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with continual lust for more." (Ephesians 4:17-19)

While the men of the world realise that other men's sins cause problems, they have no idea how to stop them apart from telling them to stop.  This does not work.

They want moral regeneration without spiritual regeneration.  Our good ministers of parliament want good students and tax payers without allowing the only one who is Good to enter our schools.  Moral regeneration without spiritual regeneration does not exist.  It tries to hold out a set of ever changing rules without providing any way of abiding by these rules.  The power of our own will is not strong enough to fight the desires of our nature.  It is only the Spirit of the Living God who is able to defeat and change inner appetites, lusts and fears. "... live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desire of the sinful nature." (Galatians 5:16)

EVEN BELIEVERS NO LONGER KNOW RIGHT FROM WRONG

Three very popular modern yet evil practices that enter our homes every day are Spiritism, Pornography and Gambling.  Let us establish a law of human nature before we continue.  It is easier to see the speck in your friend's eye than the beam in your own (quote Jesus).

Spiritism is alive and well in Southern Africa.  We have seen the increasing promotion and acceptability of Shamanism (Sangomas and Njangas) in all our media.  An amusing debate rages between the Black South African community and white Sangomas.  The question is asked, "Can whites become Sangomas? Surely it is a black thing?"  The simple answer is that whites also have dead relatives.  Whites also love watching John Edward's "Crossing Over" and disturbing the dead.  According to 1 Samuel 28 it is quite possible BUT consulting the dead or spirits has always been strongly condemned by the God of the Bible.

"I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute themselves by following them, and I will cut him off from his people." (Leviticus 20:6)

"Let no one be found among you who ... practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.  Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord." (Deuteronomy 18:10-12)

The sin is a rejection of a complete reliance on God for guidance and direction.  People who consult mediums are often themselves without God's direction, looking for answers and this practice only leads to more spiritual blindness.  "The god of this age had blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel." (2 Corinthians 4:4)  This can lead to the loss of their eternal soul.

Pornography is not prohibited in the Bible but then neither is Gambling.  Even though the Bible does not use these words, it definitely speaks about the spirit or demon behind these two sins of the flesh.  Both sins are very similar in their "thrill effect".  They are both addictive and give a strange and enticing enjoyment.  Both lead to death and destruction.

Job 31:1-12 speaks clearly about the eyes and lust and the destruction that comes from this.  It show the loss of God's blessing as a result of sin.  God can only bless obedience although He might still love a man in sin.

"Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed." (Luke 12:15)

"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry." (Colossians 3:5)

"No immoral, impure or greedy person - such person is an idolater - has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God." (Ephesians 5:5)

What is happening with sexual and financial immorality and greed is that we take our eyes off the only living God and place our joy, relief, entertainment and hopes on a false god.  The Romans and Greeks acknowledge the gods of greed and lust.  So do we when we engage in these practices.
