The Greatest Thing
by Erik Momsen
Set me as a seal on Your heart, as a seal on Your arm; for love is strong as death. Jealousy is cruel as the grave; its flames are flames of fire, a flame of Jehovah. Many waters cannot quench love, nor will the rivers overflow it. If a man would give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be scorned. (Song of Songs 8:6,7)
Song of Songs skips enticingly between the themes of love between a woman and her lover and the people of God and their Lord. We constantly ask ourselves, is this a man and a woman or God and his people? Paul did the same thing to us in Ephesians 5:
"This is a profound mystery - but I am talking about Christ and the church." (5:32)
Love is the most over stated and underrated word.
"Oh I love that color on you" or "I just love beer and beef".
The love between a man and his wife should be the greatest love on earth, but so much more the love between a people and their God should be the greatest force in the universe.
We are supposed to be in the greatest love relationship in history but settle for little imitation loves. Many believers are in a loveless marriage with God
I recently heard the old chorus, "The greatest thing in all my life is loving you" and I was deeply struck by it. The song writer then sinks the bed-rock truth with the second and third verses. "The greatest thing .... is serving you - is knowing you".
While the second two activities - serving and knowing - are good, they have no place next to love. The reason is that they overtake LOVE so easily. Some never get to love and only "serve" and "know". Many marriages wither into duty and hanging in their while they are supposed to be as strong as death, jealous as the grave, passionate as flame and priceless beyond measure.
Peter tried to know and serve but Jesus only wanted to know one thing from him in the end, "Peter do you love me, do you love me, do you love me?"
A GOD OF LOVE AND JEALOUSY
"You shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them. For I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the sons to the third and fourth generation of those that hate me, and showing mercy to thousands of those that love Me and keep My commandments". (Exodus 20:5,6)
- DON'T DARE STARE AT THE COMMANDMENTS - LOOK INTO HIS LOVE!!!
- The strongest sanction in the Old Testament is towards a people who turn to other gods - they forsake their undivided love towards God.
"Then I will set my face against that man, and against his family, and will cut him off, and all that go a whoring after him, to commit whoredom with Molech, from among their people. And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people." (Leviticus 20:5,6)
- Blessing comes from loving God.
- Cures from stirring up His jealousy.
- I love His jealousy over me!!!
AT THE END OF ME
In my tiredness, failure and sin when I have nothing left to pride in, when my works are gone, my self discipline crumbled, all I have left is my love for God and His endless love for me. His love never ends!!!
WHAT DO YOU WANT?
GOD'S PRESENCE WITH YOU
GOD'S LOVE WITH YOU
GOD'S PROTECTION WITH YOU
GOD'S PROVISION FOR YOU
THEM JUST LOVE HIM!!!
Jesus answered and said to him, If a man loves Me, he will keep My Word. And My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him." (John 14:23)
Obedience is not the goal but the result of love.
Love produces obedience and God's presence and protection.
