When God is Centre

by Erik Momsen

I had trouble with the wheel alignment on my car.  The basic problem is that the wheels are not pointing in exactly the right direction.  The tell-tail signs are wobbling of the wheels and excessive tyre wear.

I would be driving and as I get to cruising speed the vehicle starts shuddering and becomes unstable.  I then have to back off and crawl along.  When I inspected the tyres I could see that this is costing me a lot of money.  The tyres are being scrubbed off.

My bad wheel alignment is a good illustration of many people's lives.  They never seem to get up to speed.  They continuously get the wobbles and their lives cost them so much both in money and heartache.

The issue at hand is the direction of turning wheels and the direction of lives.  The first of the Ten Commandments reads; "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of slavery.  You shall have no gods before me." (Exodus 20:2-3)

There is a strange confidence and absolute about the first line.  The "I Am" is the translation of 'YAHWEH', which is the name God speaks to Moses at the burning bush and which Jesus uses for himself when he says "before Abraham was born, I am!" (John 8:58)

It is the ultimate name and the name of the Ultimate.  The eternal present, always was and always will be.  Present in every situation, at all times and everywhere.

More than that, Yahweh is not the Ultimate God who is UNINVOLVED in the lives of the creatures He made.  Instead He "brought you ... out of slavery."

Yahweh brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt and Yahweh (Jesus) brought the world out of slavery.

Yahweh is also not ignorant and aloof from the creatures He is saving.  He became one of us so he could represent God’s side and our side at the same time.  He understands both sides of the problem of the sin of man.

Another problem a wheels can have is that its axle is not precisely in the middle of the wheel.  The results are very serious.  Likewise all our problems are in the fact that God is not the centre.  We shift our focus from Him onto either ourselves, money or some other false god.

The problems for most people is their fight with themselves, others and with money.

We focus on the problems within ourselves and on the problems in the people around us.  Get over it!  You are far from perfect and the people around you are even worse.  It saddens me and I am sure it destroys God to see how people abuse themselves and others.  I am not talking about violence, sexual and substance abuse.  I am talking about the ideas people have about themselves and others.  We destroy the images God has made.

However, those who have their eyes set on God and not on themselves know this: "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." (Psalm 139:14)

They also know "All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be." (v.16).

Another "self issue" is the accusation of God.  God gets accused of things.  This is blasphemy and it will destroy you, not God.

The other area where people are blatantly out of balance is in the area of money.  If God is central in this area it will reflect in the first thing you do with your pay package.  If God is first, He will get the first share.  This is called the principle of "first fruits" (Exodus 23;16, Malachi 3;8).

God desires to have blessed children.  This blessing comes from our Centre.  Are we centred on Him and in obedience to Him?

"See I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.  For I command you today to Love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you." (Deuteronomy 30:15)

The Lord does not want your wobbles and slow progress.  Hence He demands your love, obedience and submission.  He says in Exodus 20; "I am a jealous God".  He can say that.  He is God.
