Complete & utter freedom
by Erik Momsen
Very, very few people are free. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Free at last, thank God Almighty, I’m free at last". A few days later he was shot to death. Perhaps he was only free then. Nelson Mandela wrote "A long Walk to Freedom". On his release from prison Winnie was waiting.
Most people are not free from pain, fear, anger, need, depression and even sin. We do what we do not want to do.
Christians on the other hand are supposed to be free but not many are. We are also burdened by do’s and don’ts and guilt. Many feel, "I’m not a good Christian".
The Bible says "if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed" (John 8: 36). If Jesus said he set me free, I must be free. I don’t want to argue with that and neither should any Christian.
JESUS ON FREEDOM
Jesus said, "If you hold to my teachings you are my disciples. then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." ... "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed." (John 8: 31- 36)
• Why are we not free? - "everyone who sins is a slave to sin."
• How are we set free? - "the truth will set you free."
• What is the truth? - "my teachings."
What are His teachings?
- "I am the light of the world." (8:12)
- "I stand with the Father who sent me." (8:16)
- "Where I go you cannot come." (8:21)
- "You will die in your sin; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be." (8:24)
- "When you have lifted up the Son of Man then you will know that I am the one ... I speak just what the Father has taught me. I always do what pleases Him." (8:28-29)
FREEDOM COMES FROM BELIEVING THE TRUTH OF WHO JESUS IS & THE TRUTH OF HIS TEACHINGS.
IF THE SON SETS YOU FREE YOU ARE NOT A SLAVE TO SIN.
IF THE SON SETS YOU FREE YOU HAVE A PERMANENT PLACE IN THE FAMILY OF GOD.
POSITION, POSITION, POSITION
- SET FREE FROM SIN & SET IN THE FAMILY.
Would any reasonable parent reject her child with warts, boils or donut nose? It becomes a little more difficult because it calls for so much more love, of which we are in limited supply, to love a child with a drinking problem, bad language, sexual deviations etc. Had we enough love we could love them through anything. How much more will God love you and holds you no matter what - IF YOU ARE A SON/DAUGHTER.
God is afraid that anything, man or demon made, will come between you and His great love. God is afraid that laws and false standards will keep you away from Him. Would you go and visit the queen in dirty jeans and oily T-shirt? But would you visit your mum like that? There are no pretences among family.
"If I am free why do I feel so bound?"
- We have not believed the truth.
- We have not accepted our position.
- We have not sown to the Spirit.
PAUL ON FREEDOM
"It was for freedom that Christ has set us free." (Galatians 5:1 cf.4,5,13,16,18) = get yourself free.
"You are trying to be justified by law." (5:4) = trying to be good in your own strength.
"But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope." (5:5) = faith in the grace of the cross allows the Spirit to work righteousness in us now.
"Live by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desire of your sinful nature." (5:16) = sow to the Spirit and He will take over.
