Reaching the City (2)
In the same way that we want our own lives, our homes and our churches to reflect the glory of God, we also want our cities to do so. The salvation of our city lies in the hands of believers who believe it is possible to changed the spiritual climate of our streets along with our churches.
Believers were made to change the world and make other believers. It is our life blood. Restoring what the locust has eaten should be in our hearts as it is in God's. The Old Testament has some of the answer to seeing our land healed. 2 Chronicles 7:14 writes "if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."
God’s people - in humility - need to pray - seek God’s will - turn from their sin and He has promised to heal their land.
i) Believe God can change a city.
ii) In humility believe that God has the answer, and not us.
iii) Praying and seeking His face results in us knowing His mind on issues.
iv) As we seek His face we will be confronted by our own sin, and change.
PRAYING FOR THE WHOLE CITY!
"I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone-- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth." (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
Paul says that "first of all" we must pray for "everyone". The result will be that "we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” God’s aim is that He ... wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."
JESUS' SIMPLE METHOD FOR REACHING A CITY
(Ref Ed Silvoso - Harvest Evangelism)
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. He told them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. "When you enter a house, first say, 'Peace to this house.' If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. "When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you . Heal the sick who are there and tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you.' (Luke 10:1-9)
i) Jesus picks all believers who are ready to go - not just the twelve.
ii) Jesus sent them to introduce Him before He came into their lives. Likewise we introduce people to Jesus and he then directs their lives.
iii) It all starts with prayer - "Ask the Lord for more workers."
iv) You don’t need much to go.
FOUR THINGS YOU MUST DO!!
1) BLESS THEM - "First say 'Peace to this house.' " Think, live and speak your blessing over people. People must know how much you care before they care how much you know. Everyone wants to persuade everyone else, but very few will accept them and love them.
2) FELLOWSHIP WITH THEM - "Stay in that house, eating and drinking whatever they give you." The true sign of your acceptance of people is your willingness to give them your time and company. Eat what they eat with them. The love of God through us will make the difference.
3) PRAY FOR THEM - "Heal the sick who are there." By this stage we have shown them we care and now we show them God cares. God wants to meet them at their point of need. They need to be saved from the hole they are in. It could be personal illness or financial trouble. If they are serious about you, God and their own condition, God will deliver on His promise "All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved."
4) SHARE THE GOSPEL - "And tell them, 'The kingdom of God is near you.'" When they have seen the work of God in their lives they will be more than willing to hear the good news.
Reaching the city for Christ might not be easy, but it is quite simple. God’s people loving the lost the way God loves them and working with Him to reach them.
