O Faithless Generation
Nearly all people believe that gods or a God exists but the question of where they put their faith is a different matter. Many largely rely on their own abilities or those of people close to them. Few are the people who truly set they eyes on the author and perfecter of their faith (Hebrews 12).
I think this is largely due to the fact that few have seen faith in action. They have not been mentored in faith. They have not seen prayers answered. They have not seen miracles, healing or even exorcisms. I bet the last activity got a few feeling a little uneasy. Surely casting out demons is for scary movies and the ignorant past.
When I scan my Bible program I receive 42 strikes on the word “devils”, 17 strikes on “spirits” and 19 on the name “satan”. Similarly I get 41 strikes on “healed” and 19 on the command “heal”. It seems to me that driving out evil spirits is as important as healing – BUT THE WESTERN CHURCH HAS FORGOTTEN IT”S BATTLE AGAINST THE EVIL ONE.
I often start my search on Biblical direction in Mark as the oldest, and most direct Gospel. Mark's agenda for disciples is seen in Mark 3:14,15 - “And he appointed twelve, that they might be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, and to have authority to cast out demons”:
KJV does insert “heal sicknesses” but the oldest most reliable manuscripts do not. Obviously the disciples were to heal the sick but, I believe, Mark sees healing as a result of the defeat of demons.
The Western church does focus on healing but very often forgets the battle with “unclean spirits” or demons.
O FAITHLESS GENERATION (Mark 9:14-29)
Jesus leaves 9 disciples alone and comes back to a mess!!!
A desperate father is looking for the salvation of his son.
The disciples are unable and a religious argument ensues.
Jesus is clearly very displeased with the situation.
Jesus notes the spiritual state of the nation = “apistos” without faith.
The disciples should have done better.
The Jews should have known better.
The moment the boy is brought to Jesus and the spirit sees Him it reacts violently --- PLEASE NOTE JESUS DOES NOT.
The spirit has tried to destroy the boy from childhood - should we not be looking for demonic activity when people display destructive behavior?
The father asks, “But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us”. This gets a reaction from Jesus!!!
"IF you can?" said Jesus --- we still repeat people's words if we are shocked or incredulous. We still pray, “God can you do something about this situation?” God might just reply, “Well I think that one is a little out of my league.”
The father is struggling with faith & un-faith (apistos) – but at least he is struggling and getting much closer to his miracle.
Jesus simply commands the demon and it leaves.
The answer to driving this “kind” (“genos” = genus) of demon out is by prayer.
Jesus notes that there are different types of demons.
Perhaps the disciples had forgotten that the power to remove the demon came from Jesus. Perhaps they concentrated on the method and not the person. Noteworthy is that Jesus was away from them. The return and presence of Jesus immediately caused a strong and violent reaction in the demon.
WHY WOULD I HAVE FAITH TO CAST OUT DEMONS?
JESUS WANTS ME TO DO IT
EVIL IS NOT FROM GOD BUT FROM SATAN
I BELIEVE WE WILL SEE MORE VICTORY IF SATAN IS OUTED
WE HAVE A BATTLE THAT IS NOT AGAINST FLESH & BLOOD
